چکیده

INTRODUCTION Oral cancers are the 10th most common cancer worldwide, with oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma (OTSCC) having the highest incidence. Surgery and radiotherapy (RT), the mainstay treatments for OTSCC, impact on the patients’ quality of life and the 50% 5-year survival has remained unchanged for 40 years. Cancer stem cells (CSCs) have been proposed to be the origin of many cancers, including oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (OCSCC). CSCs express the embryonic stem cell (ESC) markers OCT4, NANOG, SOX2, SALL4 and STAT3, the more ‘downstream’ CSC marker CD44 and the epithelial cell marker p63, suggesting a diverse phenotype. The relative abundance and co-expression of these markers and their localisation within OCSCC remain unclear.

Cancer Stem Cells in Moderately Differentiated Lip Squamous Cell Carcinoma Express Components of the Renin–Angiotensin System

AIM We investigated the expression of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) by cancer stem cell (CSC) subpopulations we have identified in moderately differentiated lip squamous cell carcinoma (MDLSCC). METHOD Ten MDLSCC samples underwent 3,3-diaminobenzidine (DAB) and immunofluorescent immunohistochemical (IHC) staining for (pro)renin receptor (PRR), angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE), angiote...

Expression and Localization of Cathepsins B, D, and G in Two Cancer Stem Cell Subpopulations in Moderately Differentiated Oral Tongue Squamous Cell Carcinoma

AIM We have previously demonstrated the putative presence of two cancer stem cell (CSC) subpopulations within moderately differentiated oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma (MDOTSCC), which express components of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS). In this study, we investigated the expression and localization of cathepsins B, D, and G in relation to these CSC subpopulations within MDOTSCC. MET...

Cancer Stem Cells in Moderately Differentiated Buccal Mucosal Squamous Cell Carcinoma Express Components of the Renin–Angiotensin System

AIM We have recently identified and characterized cancer stem cell (CSC) subpopulations within moderately differentiated buccal mucosal squamous cell carcinoma (MDBMSCC). We hypothesized that these CSCs express components of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS). METHODS 3,3'-Diaminobenzidine (DAB) immunohistochemical (IHC) staining was performed on formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded MDBMSCC sampl...

Cancer Stem Cells in Oral Cavity Squamous Cell Carcinoma: A Review

Cancer stem cells (CSCs) have been identified in oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (OCSCC). CSCs possess the ability for perpetual self-renewal and proliferation, producing downstream progenitor cells and cancer cells that drive tumor growth. Studies of many cancer types including OCSCC have identified CSCs using specific markers, but it is still unclear as to where in the stem cell hierarchy...

The Cancer Stem Cell Hypothesis in Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma: A New Target for the Treatment

Within a single tumor clone, cells have significantly different abilities to proliferate and form new tumors. This has led to the hypothesis that most cells in a cancer have a limited ability to divide and only a small subset of distinct cells, the cancer stem cells (CSCs), has the capacity to self-renew and form new tumors . It has been proposed that the development of tumors is based exclusiv...
